We will start in the morning at the Dome, named after San Gennaro, the patron saint of the city. We will then walk along the old decumanus, today called via Tribunali, and reach, in the heart of the old city, via San Gregorio Armeno, the characteristic street where artisans in their workshops create Christmas cribs and clay figurines. We will then reach the other decumanus, today called via San Biagio dei Librai, as well as the piazzetta Largo Corpo di Napoli and the famous Sansevero chapel where, benefitting from a priority access, we will admire the famous Cristo Velato (Veiled Christ) statue and the other artworks surrounding it. At around noon, we will stop in a typical pizzeria nearby (tables will be reserved in advance and prices will be pre-arranged). If you wish, of course, you may also organise your own lunch. In the afternoon, we will learn more about Naples by visiting piazza San Domenico Maggiore, piazza del Gesù with the homonymous church, as well as the church and cloister of Santa Chiara. We will then move to via Toledo, where we will visit what was recently declared to be the world’s most beautiful subway station. We will also visit the Galleria Umberto I and reach piazza Municipio and admire the majestic Castel Nuovo. We will pass by the Teatro San Carlo, Europe’s oldest and still one of its largest opera houses. We will then visit the nearby piazza del Plebiscito, where the Royal palace faces the semi-circular piazza and the San Francesco di Paola Cathedral. By proceeding on via Santa Lucia, we will walk along the Pizzofalcone hill and finally reach the islet of Megaride. The islet was the city’s oldest settlement and since centuries hosts the Castel dell’Ovo, which symbolises the city’s connection with its gulf. The day will end, for those who wish, with an aperitif on the seafront by the sunset. |
