We will start in piazza del Plebiscito and, by walking down besides the Acton gardens, we will see on the one hand the old port, and on the other the Palazzo dell’Ammiragliato (palazzo of the Admiral). We will proceed on via Santa Lucia, which used to stretch along the seafront, and visit the Santa Maria della Catena church, which hosts the tomb of the admiral Francesco Caracciolo. Before the area was elevated above the sea level, Santa Lucia was a fishermen village. Today, it hosts exclusive yachting clubs. On the islet of Megaride, we will visit the now classic Borgo Marinaro and the prison cells and marvellous terraces of the majestic Castel dell’Ovo. After returning to the seafront promenade, we will reach piazza Vittoria and the Villa comunale (city park) and visit its aquarium. We will walk by the popular Mappatella beach and then reach Mergellina and its elegant chalets. That’s a good place for enjoying an aperitif or, if you wish, have lunch or dinner in a traditional pizzeria or trattoria (on a fixed-price basis). |
